Auto PM stash qestion.
How much PMs should I keep in my car in case SHTF and I'm out on the road?
My job requires that I drive at least 100 miles one way from my home 2-3 times a week. I already have a survival pack in the trunk with food and water, flashlight, CB radio and what not. The goal would be to get me back home. But how much in PMs should I stash in there? Since silver is still cheap  I though I should go with junk 90% Merc. dimes. and maybe a couple of 1/10 oz. of gold. How much 90% is enough? Is that enough gold? |

get a money belt I would store few small gold coins. I would not store silver. on a 1/10th of an oz coin you can buy a guard cause they might not know better. no one is going to bother with silver. |

Re: Auto PM stash qestion.
I would bet you can stick maybe 12 - 15 oz in single oz coins and a little less in smaller coins. I woudl pad them though so they do not wiggle and make nice metalic sound.
you also might want to keep cash in smaller notes than 100, a charged phone card, and maybe in your car somewhere 5 - 10 dollars in normal dimes and quarters. in the event of a tshtf in the us likely not all of infrastracture will fail all at once. think as to why you might need a gold coin. surely do not carry all you have on you. |

Re: Auto PM stash qestion.
I don't travel much these days,
but when I did, I always used one of these for my passport and fifty one dollar bills. Back then, in South America they loved US dollar bills, .... don't know about today. passport pouch dtnwn |
Re: Auto PM stash qestion.
Eagle Creek apparently intends their's
to worn around the waist. The two I own, are very thin/strong nylon, and have straps long enough to go over my neck and one shoulder. they're worn under one's shirt in such a way that the pouch is just below your armpit. Unless you are searched, no one knows it's there. Worn this way they are so comfortable you might forget they are there too. (I used one at a time, but nothing prevents you from crisscrossing two a la Pancho Villa .) dtnwn http://www.uoregon.edu/~caguirre/villa2.jpg |
Re: Auto PM stash qestion.
I wouldn't store any on your vehicle (other than not having them all in one place).
The general thoughts I have read is that when TSHTF, at first, cash will be king, then probably barter items (Toilet paper, cigarettes, whatever runs out and is needed). Then, PM's. That being said, I would think you could make it back 100 miles from anywhere before it gets to that. When TSHTF, the average sheep wont know the value or what to do with a PM. Just my thoughts. |
Re: Auto PM stash qestion.
I disagree on silver not being as useful as gold. Whenever I travel a tape a few 10oz bars under my fat folds.
Just kidding! :D I don't have any 10oz bars... er... I fat folds I mean. I did hear about a nudist who concealed a NAA mousegun that way, though. If you're anything like me you can just drop a 1,000oz delivery bar down the front of your pants and it will be lost in the bulge that's already there. Wow, that was really awful! Ok, a little more seriously I would say that I have always liked those little magnetic key holders that seemed to be briefly popular in the 80's. They can clean out the inside of your car, but who's really going to search the undercarriage of your Rolls Canardly? I'd buy one of those hugely powerful magnets they sell in catalogs, you know, the 500lbs kind, build my own little box and expoxy or bolt the magnet to it. Then I'd stick it somewhere under my car where it isn't likely to be hit by road debris and call it good. Fractional gold is probably the best for barter but full ounce gold coins will be the most impressive for bribes. Silver probably will be useful at some point but right now it is probably not as widely recognized as gold. I'd go with the 90% Mercs or Walkers because they are obviously old and pretty and therefore have the appearance of value, otherwise it's all about 1oz and half ounce rounds. How much I would carry would depend on the value of fuel and metal at the time. I'd probably bring as much gold or silver as would be needed to cover the cost of lunch, gas and tolls to get back home. I also wouldn't bother bringing much if any right now as the dollar may be on shakey ground but it still quite a ways from collapsing. A checking account, credit card or wad of cash will do the job better for the immediate future. |

And when the car gets stolen?
|
Re: Auto PM stash qestion.
That's why you should drive a nondescript beater too ugly to be worth stealing and festoon it with bumperstickers that suggest you're a wild eyed pistol waver who isn't affraid to die. :D
Nah, that's just like what if your house got broken into and your preps were stolen, what if the Feds seized the land your retreat was on, what if you got fired and could never find another job, what if your aunt had balls... all you can do is take reasonable precautions and play the hand you've been dealt. For some people a few hundred bucks is pocket change, for others its their life's savings. Others glue razor blades to the back side of their steering wheel in all the place a normal person would try to hold it and stick hat pins point up in their seat cusions when they park and get out of their vehicle. |
Re: Auto PM stash qestion.
I wouldn't bother taking PM's in your car, stick with cash. It would be quite a while before the average person would take PM's over cash. Being only 100 miles away you could walk home if you really had to anyway.
As for the car booby trap thing. I was thinking of rigging up a can of bear spray so it would go off when the drivers side door was opened. Only reason why I haven't yet is that I would probably forget it was there and get myself.:banghead: |
Re: Auto PM stash qestion.
As far as booby traps to keep your car from being stolen, I like kill switches located in an out of the way place. I love pepper spray booby traps but they're a no-go in cars, the high heat inside a parked car can make the can explode... there's a booby trap for ya! I suppose you could rig a carrier on the underbody if you really wanted to, I'd put it in a pvc tube painted black to protect it from road debris and casual observation. I'd also install a cut off switch for when I want to load a passenger.

Re: Auto PM stash qestion.
OK, I HATE doing this. But I'm going to give up another one of my secrets.
Go find yourself a vest. Nothing fancy. Just a nice vest that you can wear regardless the weather. MAKE SURE it has a lining. CAREFULLY remove the lining (stitch by stitch). This gives you a vest with an inner and an outer piece of cloth. Using the liner as a pattern, cut two pieces of cloth to fit inside the vest, but small enough so the liner will still fit over it. CAREFULLY sew whatever PM's you want to carry into little pockets you form by placing your PM (say a one oz krugerand) and then sew around it. When you have as many as you feel you will need in case TSHTF, carefully sew the new 'lining' in place and then put the original lining back over that. I PROMISE you won't ever just leave it laying around. But only YOU will know what's in it. Hope that helps. You could even include Morgan silver dollars in it. Would make an 'impromptu' bullet proof vest. |

Ponce,
It beats the crap out of wearing 'your best friend' aka the 38 lb body armor in 140 degree heat, yes? |
